How to keep the spark alive with health and safety in the workplace

February 11, 2025

Maintaining a safe and healthy workplace requires ongoing commitment, attention, and effort – much like a relationship! And with Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s a perfect time to review the steps you can take to ensure the relationship between employees and health and safety in the workplace never fizzles out.

This blog post shares five tips you can take to avoid your employees falling out of love with workplace safety.

1. Communicate openly and often

Any strong relationship thrives on communication. The same goes for health and safety in the workplace. Regularly discussing risks, updates, and best practices ensures everyone is on the same page.

Encourage open conversations where employees feel comfortable reporting hazards or concerns, for example, a weekly safety briefing or a digital suggestion box can help keep communication flowing.

2. Keep training relevant and engaging

No one wants a stale, boring relationship – and that includes your employees’ relationship with health and safety. Spice things up with engaging training sessions, interactive workshops, and fun (but educational) safety challenges.

Keeping training fresh and dynamic, such as conducting fire drills that simulate real emergencies or hosting first-aid workshops, can make training more effective and enjoyable.

3. Show appreciation for safe practices

When employees follow safety procedures, reward and acknowledge their efforts. A simple ‘thank you’, an employee recognition programme, or even a small incentive can reinforce positive behaviour and keep motivation high.

For example, a “Safety Star of the Month” initiative can highlight employees who consistently follow best practices. This can work particularly well in industries and workplaces where the risks of not following health and safety procedures can have more severe consequences and accidents are more likely, such as factories and construction sites.

4. Adapt and grow over time

A great relationship is ever-evolving and adapts to new challenges and changes as necessary. The same goes for your health and safety policies. Regularly reviewing and updating procedures to stay compliant with regulations ensures they meet the needs of both your employees and the law.

Adaptability is key to maintaining an effective safety culture. In an office-based environment, for example, updating ergonomic workstations as new research emerges can significantly help to prevent workplace injuries.

5. Prioritise employee wellbeing

At the most basic level, you should ensure that equipment is maintained, hazards are addressed promptly, and the work environment always remains safe. A consistently well-kept workplace shows that you care about your employees’ health and wellbeing.

However, health and safety isn’t just about avoiding accidents. It’s also about creating a culture of care. Encourage breaks, promote mental health awareness, and create a supportive environment where employees feel valued – investing in an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is a great way to do this. Don’t forget that a happy and healthy workforce is a productive one!
