We were pleased to welcome Samantha to the Vero HR office for two days of work experience. Currently completing her A-Levels, Samantha thought a career in HR would be a great option for her, so she reached out to us for the opportunity to help cement her decision for the future. Read her account of her time with us below.

I recently completed two days of work experience at Vero HR. I am currently in the first year of A-Levels and I study Business and Health and Social, and was looking to find a career that combined the two. Also, being a people person, I thought HR might be a great option for me to explore as a career. I was grateful to spend a couple of days at the Vero HR office to understand the fundamentals of the industry.
On my first day, I was welcomed and introduced to the staff and was given an agenda on what I would be doing that day. This made me feel very comfortable knowing that they were well-prepared. I first spoke to The Business Development Manager who explained that excellent service is crucial to building a strong relationship between the company and its clients. This was very insightful into how client and business relationships work.
Next, I then spoke to the HR team. In the beginning, I didn’t have much of an idea of what they did on a day-to-day basis, as there are many different roles in this HR team all making sure everything happens as smoothly as possible. This includes making sure all checks are done, and forms are filled out, the hiring and leaving process, and carrying out investigations into misconduct. This I found the most interesting, as I like investigations and the idea of something new each day.
Following this, I then visited the Technology team. Turns out this role is not all about IT skills and more about making sure that their online tools are accessible to their clients and working with employees to make their HR system ‘homepage’ personalised to them. Following this, I spoke to the Recruitment Team who were super friendly and showed me how they match a client with a vacant job role and how they go about conducting interviews on behalf of other companies.
To end my experience with Vero HR, I got to experience the Marketing side of their company, I found this very beneficial for extending my range of skills as this linked closely to my Business A-Level content and it was nice to put this into practice.
To round this all up, I was able to present to Mike, the CEO, what I had learnt, and the skills required for each department. I am grateful for the opportunity to experience briefly what it is like at Vero HR, and this has helped me to realise I would like to pursue a career in HR.
Work experience can be a valuable opportunity for individuals to gain new skills and insights into their chosen career path.
