Workplace Grievance Meeting

What is a workplace grievance?

A workplace grievance is a formal or informal complaint raised by an employee about a workplace issue. Anything from unfair treatment or discrimination through to concerns about working conditions, bullying, harassment, or pay disputes. Essentially, it’s any matter that an employee feels is unjust or doesn’t comply with their employment contract or company policies.

Why is workplace grievance support important?

Our workplace grievance service is all about ensuring that grievances are handled fairly and in accordance with best practice and employment law. If the grievance process isn’t managed properly, you expose your company to all kinds of risks. From employment tribunal claims and reputational damage through to a breakdown in workplace morale and potential legal consequences.

It’s our job to make sure that doesn’t happen. Working closely with your own team, our HR experts can guide you through each stage of the grievance process, ensuring fairness for everyone involved whilst keeping your business risk to an absolute minimum.

Your workplace grievances questions answered

An informal grievance is typically an initial complaint that an employee raises verbally or informally with their manager or HR team. If resolved quickly, no formal procedure needs to be followed. A formal grievance is a written complaint that triggers a structured process, including an investigation and formal hearing. Formal grievances are more serious and require you to follow set procedures and timelines.

The timeline varies depending on the complexity of the grievance and the amount of investigation needed. However, best practice suggests that an initial grievance meeting should be held within five days of receiving a formal grievance. The entire process typically takes between two and four weeks, though more complex cases may take longer.

If an employee is unhappy with the grievance outcome, they have the right to appeal. An appeal should be heard by a different person who wasn’t involved in the original decision. They’ll review the evidence with fresh eyes and can uphold, overturn or vary the original decision. The appeal hearing should follow a similar process to the original grievance hearing.
