Health and Safety Risk Assessments

A workplace accident is every business owner’s worst nightmare, but the real danger often lies in what you can’t see. Hidden hazards, poor working conditions, and unassessed risks don’t announce themselves. They quietly expose your business to serious incidents, fines, reputational damage, or harm to your team.

That’s what health and safety risk assessments are for. With over 20 years of experience helping UK businesses identify and manage workplace hazards, Vero HR conducts thorough, professional risk assessments that protect your people and your business.

We help businesses identify and manage workplace hazards through our extensive health and safety risk assessment audits. Contact our team today.

What is a health and safety risk assessment?

A health and safety risk assessment is an examination of your workplace to identify anything that could cause harm to your employees, visitors, contractors, or anyone else affected by your business activities. It’s about spotting the hazards and then taking action to prevent or minimise the risks they pose.

Health and safety risk assessments are a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Every employer must conduct a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. If you employ five or more employees, you must record your findings in writing.

Our HR health and safety services give you:

  • Qualified professionals to conduct a detailed walkthrough of your premises, identifying all potential hazards.
  • Assessment of the likelihood and severity of each identified hazard, considering your control measures.
  • A clear, recorded risk assessment that meets legal requirements and serves as your working document.
  • Guidance on implementing recommended control measures and embedding safer practices.
  • Help reviewing and updating your risk assessment when circumstances change on a regular basis.

The problem with poor risk assessment

Many businesses mistakenly think they don’t need a formal risk assessment. They’re wrong. Incidents happen in offices just as they do in factories. Stress, poor ergonomics, slips, trips, and manual handling are hazards that exist across all sectors. Without a proper assessment, you won’t know what you’re missing.

Why should I choose Vero HR?

We’ve assessed offices, factories, warehouses, retail spaces, healthcare settings, construction sites, and everything in between. We know what to look for, what questions to ask, and how to spot hazards others might miss.

With over 20 years of experience and recognised as the 2024 HR Consultancy of the Year, you know you and your employees are in safe hands. See how our expert health and safety specialists can help you stay compliant.

Our health and safety risk assessment support

Comprehensive risk assessment

We start with a thorough walkthrough of your workplace. Our qualified professionals examine your premises, observe work activities, review your existing documentation, and talk to your team. The result is a detailed risk assessment that captures your specific workplace and operations.

Documentation and recording

We provide a clear, written risk assessment that documents your findings, identifies significant hazards, records control measures, and explains who is responsible for implementation. This document serves both as your legal record and your working guide.

Implementation guidance

A risk assessment is only valuable if acted upon. We provide practical guidance on implementing control measures, including advice on training, supervision, equipment procurement, and procedural changes. We’ll help you prioritise actions based on risk level and feasibility.

Regular review and update support

We help you review and update your assessment when circumstances change, such as new equipment, process changes, incidents, new regulations, or changes to your workforce or activities. We’ll identify what’s changed and help you update your assessment accordingly or review it on a scheduled annual basis.

Frequently asked questions

Your risk assessment should be a working document. Share it with your team so they understand the hazards and the control measures in place. Use it to guide training, to inform decisions about equipment and processes, and as a reference when something changes. Review it regularly, update it when needed, and keep it accessible.

At a minimum, you should review your risk assessment annually. You should also update it whenever circumstances change. Reviews are typically quick if nothing major has changed, but it’s important to keep your assessment current.
